joakim is back.this time tough, he surprises us with a small pop jewel! but lonely hearts is not a classic pop song, it is much more joakims interpretation of one. a catchy tune, which does not want to be one. an exciting contrast between catchiness and a bleeping onslaught.on lonely hearts, cheesy sounding strings really stand out over a stoic stomping drum beat, dark singing grates against beeping keyboard playing, in the chorus a wonderful melody has a comforting effect over the very sad lyrics.in addition to the album version and the radio edit, the lonely hearts maxi also features the loving hand remix by tim goldsworthy. the musician (lcd soundsystem) and label owner (dfa records) skillfully pulls lonely hearts to the left, brushing it into a dark club track. with the distorted slow motion vocals, the funky bass run and the demanding beats, it is suddenly very close to the sound that already characterized joakims club hits are you vegetarian and come into my kitchen. and you ll also fin a joakim dub of the track. this dub keep the pop side of the song with a more catchy approach for a more dancefloor version of the original and with always the weirdness you use to find now in the joakim production !supported by tim sweeney, prins thomas

detroit s new >soundshift< imprint makes a stunning debut with this intoxicating two-tracker. opening up is the soultek remix of billy dalessandro s smashing >don t sleep< release (which was found in the many sets of dan bell, ame, annie mac & pete tong last month) this mix is nothing short of brilliant and will certainly capture the hearts and sets of all those mathew jonson or loco dice fans out there. it has a subtlety that really creeps up on you and before you know it you re tapping your feet and zoning out listening to the intricacies of the music. truly minimal, there are loads of space within the track which is somewhat similar to the original but still a world apart, particularly in the fantastically eerie synth programming. in the forefront of the song is the shimmering and haunting vocal loop, >don t sleep< which has an almost hypnotic effect. (think richie hawtin in closer) the melody of the title is a delicate affair which sips cocktails in the company of some nicely chosen whirring and echoing noises. the build is effected so subtly it verges on melancholy but halfway through a rumbling bassline, appregiated melody and backbeat hi-hat pattern announce a funkier escalation!!

sleazy mcqueen and the nasty fruits make their boogie farm debut with an e.p. full of tripped out detroit-influenced disco-funk! on the a-side we have the detroit influenced >neurotic city<. it s smooth pads and eerie percussives blend well with the breathing bass line and chaotic melody making it the most clubby track of the release. on the inside, we find >things i do for you<, a heady deep house workout that will appeal to fans of late night debauchery! we ve been told that it was written late at night after a few bottles of wine, when sleazy mcqueen woke up the next day, there it was on his desk top. we think he should get drunk every night if this is the result! on the flip its remix time courtesy of one of the hottest guys and label at the moment: philip lauer and brontosaurus! the >brontosaurus< remix of >gimme a kiss<, with its smooth running bass line and great pulsating rhythms keeps a good disco vibe reminiscent of kano! boogie on!

a stunning 3 track ep. >enter the night< provides a very funky vibe. with minimal feel, typified in cuts (yeah, shake a leg!), this records kicks off with a house rhythm before a bristling bass really starts driving the piece along. a smoke filled voice soon comes in, throwing the listener off talking about nights and exits or no exits while the track >no exits< on b2 is a fine and dark mixture of crisp beats and glitchy percussion to create a forceful groove as spluttery synth stabs keep up the incessant pressure. cuts of mazi s vocal twist things just that bit more evil as the house edged mood continues its push further into new depths of mayhem. the driving melody in >sarabbath< on b1 is quite a head-turner and should create a stir in the clubs, using the more minimal and melody side of this great 12inch

the psychological poets drop some nasty beats here. it took a while for this record to finally arrive after we got the first demosent. not strange with this group of intellectuals from bulgaria who are constantly in group therapy for a hobby! the original mix of remix (whats in a name) is funked up techno flavoured infective beats, topped with a hard to resist melody.

really impressive, strong techno music! this ep is a split in between three rising stars on the swedish techno scene. prataps contribution starts of with a wicked groove that just goes on and on. and before you know it, you are totally lost in a melody that is slowly building up. the flip from nihad tule and lasseman is on the very same tip. nihad, know from his release on hz trax will not let any body down! a really strong and groovy sound is coming your way and just keeps on building. hypnotic and very funky!

a: tral 49 - a easy beat with good placed cheeping sounds and well-balanced grooves are the key elements of the track >tral 49<. after a dj friendly introduction gloominess and psyche meet each other and invite to dance as both complement each other in full harmony and build the peak to the basis. b 1: zwischenlandung is a minimal track which atmosphere bringsa convenient feeling. the track starts with an emotional bass line which makes space, in the continuing story line, for a melancholic melody which coherence and charm never gets lost. b 2: der kuss des drachen -the finish is a nice homage to all which prefer a more relaxed motion but don t want to start sleeping on the way. a grooving beat cooperates in effective harmony with a classic chinese stringed bowed instrument so that you don t want to stop to seesaw in the rhythm. the whole time short padding sounds build up and down without losing the red line or leaving space for boredom

sleepy hollow was obviously inspired by the movie of the same name. it is one of my favourite pictures by tim burton and i really like the dark, creepy atmosphere of it. the bass-line recreates this mood to an extent that it scares me, makes me shiver. i mean, really! regenerate has such a strong techhouse vibe to it, again reminiscent of the early 90s and a very strong groove. excellent percussion programming and modulation by stephan. this one builds and builds until it completely gets you. personally i think all due respect is the most laidback, reduced track on the album. we came up with this distinctive, monotone melody/bass and i loved the feeling right away. definetely the kind of music that i like to play on a sunday after hour session

dreamy and epic at the same time, phoskitos is a >state-of-the-art< trancer, taking its cues both from the trademark factor city sound (the lethal combination of fat bass and spiralling synths best witnessed in undo & vicknoise 12s) and the new wave of uk producers (holden & the border community crew). >el tren asesino< is a tigh minimal groover, based around a couple of simple, mind piercing, synth bleeps, a tension builder track that has already been packing dancefloors while playtested by the factor city djs. >dismonster< nicely complements the package, with its dizzy, bubbling bassline and nostalgic melody, it developes nicely with unexpected turns, stops and twists
